How to Create a Truly Military Friendly Campus

The term "military friendly" campus gets thrown around quite a bit - what does it truly take to bring the right support and services together for military veterans coming to campus? Are there examples of schools that have taken a comprehensive approach to welcoming veterans back to their communities?

In this seminar you will learn:

  • The significant incentives of the new Post 9/11 G.I. Bill and why these incentives are driving veterans to pursue higher education
  • The checklist of 18 "Best Practices" (policies, programs, etc.) for higher education institutions to adopt that will make your organization stand out as truly "veteran friendly" in the minds of transitioning service members
  • Grants and other financial incentives for putting these programs in place

How to Attract Veterans to Campus

Colleges have a lot of experience with marketing degree and certificate programs to traditional students. But, student veterans are a non-traditional demographic. They are located on bases and installations globally, and in every small town and community. How can colleges with limited budgets reach this unique group?

In this seminar you will learn:

  • Traditional and creative ways to market your college/university to the military community
  • Ways to reach the military community (cost, low-cost and no cost methods covered)

Academic Advising of Student Veterans

What kind of a degree should an "Anti-Submarine Warfare Control System Level II Technician" pursue that would make use of his military training and prepare him for a civilian career? Would the young woman with “PATRIOT System Repairer” on her resume be better suited for a political science or computers/electronics/engineering degree? How can academic advisors make sense of cryptic course titles on a typical military transcript?

This session will empower you with tools and techniques to be able to:

  • Translate the veteran's Military Occupational Code
  • Determine the types of career fields offered through the military and how they correspond with civilian employer hiring needs
  • Realize the certification and credentialing options offered by the military
  • Understand the differences between officer and enlisted grades, including levels of responsibility and salary expectations
  • Map your educational offerings to military skill sets
  • Creative options for awarding maximum credit for military work experience

Career Advising of and Resume Preparation for Student Veterans

Unlike traditional students, student veterans have four or more years of significant work experience before they arrive on campus. When it comes time for them to consider internships and applying for jobs, they are often at a loss as to how to incorporate their military training with their academic experience. Campus career counselors, lacking familiarity with military occupations and transferrable skills, struggle to assist the student veteran with preparing a civilian resume that also reflects their military experience

What you will learn:

  • How to translate the skills acquired through the veteran's Military Occupational Code
  • Questions to ask to identify other transferrable skills learned through military experience
  • Understand the differences between officer and enlisted grades, including levels of responsibility and salary expectations to help the veteran better position him/herself for the appropriate civilian opportunities
  • How to attract employers by promoting your access to a degreed military population
